We Cycle

Electric Bikes in the upper Calder Valleywe:cycle is a West Yorkshire project providing top-of-the-range electric-assisted bikes to hilltop communities in the upper Calder Valley.  It's managed by the Alternative Technology Centre, which has been running pioneering environmental and social projects from Hebden Bridge since 1999.

This part of the Pennines is a tough challenge for cyclists.  The hills provided an early test to Tour de France competitors during the Grand Depart of 2014 and the area draws in mountain bikers throughout the year.  The 'e-bikes' bought for the we:cycle project make climbing the hills out of the valley surprisingly easy.

The we:cycle e-bikes are affordable to hire, come with full instructions & equipment and are accessibly sited in community buildings and tourist accommodation.  Our aim is to give e-bike hiring options to key groups of people –

Locals living in hilltop communities

Visitors staying in hilltop accommodation over the high season

Potential purchasers who want to Hire before they buy

With a growing number of e-bikes in the area, we want to see more people roaming further afield in the fantastic countryside, leaving their cars at home when they commute to the valley or pop down for a 'top-up' shop.  E-bikes will also give accommodation providers an extra offering for visitors to the local area.  You really can go further and explore quieter spots on an e-bike!
